Choreography logbook
Tuseday 11th of November 2014
During this class we were giving two items, one was a picture and the other a poem. The picture is a classic painting by Picasso and its called 'Gurenica'. The picture is based around a bombing in a small town in Spain. It was used to a build an understanding of the civil war and the pain they went through- tragedy of the war! This piece is the name of the small town which was bombed in 1937 which allows it to be all that more powerful, reason being because it relates to the devastation of the war, the piece becomes more real and easy to relate to for the viewer. For me and partner this is an advantage because the picture has produced many ideas in which we were able to write down and present in a spider diagram. the overall idea we got from the painting was that Picasso was portraying the idea of survival, chaotic and pain of the war. This is something both me and partner wish to reproduce in our dance.
BRAINSTORM for the Gurenica painting
Developing it into an idea:
The next item we were given was a short poem called choose by Carl Sandberg, my impression of it is that its very much about choice whether to meet others with aggression or peace, you have to communicate to get your answer. I liked the fact how this can easily tie in with the other piece we wee given. and once again many ideas started coming to mind in regards to the choice of running from the war, staying put and giving up or fighting. although our thought process wasn't as in depth as the previous item we still took into consideration how this poem could assist as in the dance. we really wanted to use the word choose throughout, to choose to stay or go is something we cam up with, almost like we were battling with the two.
The annotated poem:
The main idea we wanted to develop was the dancers (both me and my partner) having to choose between good and hope or aggression and a fight. our aim is to show the struggle we both have deciding over which path we should choose, and therefore it ties in with the painting because we have to choose to run to peace or fight a war. i think the way we can show how we develop this idea is by using facial expressions and different shapes of movement- so where something is big and exaggerated, compared to the small gestures, by doing this it will allow the audience to perhaps get a small understanding on what we are trying to portray.
what needs to be done next:
Now that we have brainstormed our ideas, and worked out different ways on how we can develop them, we now need to focus on 2/3 points and start to create a phrase around them. As partners we decided to come up with a phrase together first and then work on individual solo parts. I believe by working together first it allows us to see how one another moves and therefore work on how we can compliment each other, which is significant in a duo. Also it can be helpful to decide on a idea or a concept which we wish to portray, because if we went of working on separate parts beforehand we may of had complete different styles which may not have mesh well, however creating it together avoids this. in my opinion although this dance routine doesn't have to be an exact story, the idea has to link to the movement, it needs to show the journey which we as dancers have chosen to take. a concept is key for our dance!
Target!
My aim for this week is to create a phrase with my partner based on the idea if close/distance, and therefore in next week class we can develop it further and start to look further into the movement.
