choreography 02/12/13

choreography

In today's class, both mine and my partner objective was to polish our routine and work on the finer detail; considering we understood the dance and were able to perform it straight through without hesitation, this was the next step of development. We went through the movement to ensure they each had a purpose, a reason for being there, this is significant because the audience needs to gain something from our performance and without a journey showing this, then it just becomes worthless movements. we used the stimuluses and our motifs to refer back to. The next thing we did was looking at the shapes we created: were they big/small, the hand gestures etc. In regards to the hand gestures, we decided to make them more powerful, instead of the original mystic feeling. This was because it didn't connect with our piece.

What progress did you make?

I feel like this week both me and partner started to work really well together, we knew what we both wanted, which meant we understood each others ideas and suggestions better. For example my partner gave me the idea of slowing down a movement which made the piece look more dynamic, and instead of me disagreeing, I did it and it worked really well. This was the same in exchange. So in result our progress together has come a long way and our rehearsal periods are more useful.

I also think our connection has become stronger because we trust one another, this is not only good for when trying to portray a story in a piece but its also good when choreographing and giving opinions on each other. we are comfortable and it shows in our performance.

what do we need to do next?

  • To go home and practice as much as we can, to ensure the movements are imbedded in our muscle memory
  • To ensure we understand the journey we are on and creating, what are the reason for each movements?
  • Work on the finer detail, for example extending legs, shoulder down etc.
Target!

To practice and clean the movement by Tuesday morning!

Additional notes:

Even more focus throughout the whole class, however I felt like we were able to overcome this quickly and really start to start and develop the movements further and reasons behind them.

Our initial idea:

Going back to the idea of being close/distant, the main idea was to show each of us trying to escape, to become free. however its a struggling process and only one escapes- the tragedy of war, its a constant battle!

Feedback:

  • We engaged well into the movement,                                                                                                 we performed for our audience

Extra work we did:

These are a few videos of mine and my partner rehearsals outside of class (there only sections of the dance, that we worked on!)

Review of this videos:

When looking back on these videos that me and my partner decided to do in our spare time, I'm very pleased with what I saw. Yes there is room for improvement but at least now we know what needs adjusting- such as the sharp arm movements need to be tighter and clearer to the audience. Also some technical aspects such as pointing ankles and shapes of movement. However the energy we put in our performance, I believe is really strong and enables the piece to go to the next level. Overall i think the next step is to take the 20min break on Tuesday to finish of and polish the dance, to ensure its ready for the assessment.
